22  Dec, 2015 - Crafters Who Care, under the capable leadership of Bea Medland and Gisele Dunn report another successful year and would like to thank all their volunteers who made this possible. Please read their 2015 report on the Crafters Who Care page.

08 Dec, 2015 - Another successful and enjoyable Christmas Luncheon was enjoyed by 113 members of our club at the Le Dome Banquet Hall in Oakville.

  After a delicious turkey luncheon we sat back to enjoy our dessert as we were entertained by the "Gerry and John" duo. A lovely mixture of music and song was put forth with many familiar songs, including spiritual and Christmas, that brought back memories and a touch of emotions.

  The "Crafters Who Care" sales table displayed a beautiful assortment of items and provided a handsome sum that will be used to further the charitable works of the group. The quilt that the ladies worked on for many hours during the year was won by Barb Reynolds. Pictured above displaying the quilt are Gisele Dunn, Rosy Hayward and Bea Medland.

29 Oct, 2015 - About 30 members and partners attended the TELCO Annual Meeting at the Novatel Hotel in Toronto. Following a delicious luncheon the annual reports were presented and the future direction of TCV was put forward.

 The guest speaker was the well known Canadian writer, journalist, professor and broadcaster Ted Barris. Ted did a very interesting and animated presentation of his latest book "The Great Escape." Following his presentation Ted stayed to autograph the numerous books that the attendees purchased from his display.

 

07 April, 2015 - About fifty members and partners turned out for our Annual Meeting at Maple Grove United Church. Following a delicious luncheon the meeting opened with the reading and passing of the 2014 Annual Meeting minutes and financial reports. Elections were then held for the 2015-16 Executive, effective July 1st, 2015. Bill Hughes was elected President with thanks to Barb Gohm who will become the Past President.

 

03 Feb., 2015 - Our first general meeting of the New Year had a good turn-out on a nice sunny cold winter day. A delicious luncheon was followed with a presentation by Constable Nadine Clarke of the Community Mobilization Unit, of the Halton Regional Police Service.

Nadine's topic was How to Combat Frauds and Scams. This was of special interest to our group as to our vulnerabilities and the skills, resources and tactics of the criminals that are preying on the innocent and unsuspecting.

The best defence is for us all to be wary of unsolicited calls, mail, emails and other contacts. Protect our identity and never give out personal information except to reputable people and organizations. Even then only the minimum required.

02 Dec., 2014 - One hundred and eleven members enjoyed our Annual Christmas Luncheon at the Le Dome Dining Hall, Oakville. After a delicious turkey luncheon we sat back to enjoy our dessert as we were entertained by the harmony of the "The Gray Tones."

The afternoon concluded with a draw for the "Crafters Who Care" quilt, and the many door prizes. The year long work of the "Crafters who Care" netted almost $1,500 from their quilt raffle and craft sales. Joan Jones was the lucky winner of the quilt. The money will be donated to a worthy charity. The food collection was distributed to the Salvation Army in Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Mississauga.

07 Oct., 2014 - A good turn-out enjoyed our luncheon and general meeting at Maple Grove United Church. As a change from our usual practice of a special speaker, we were entertained by Gerry & John. With Gerry at the keyboard and John on the vocals, a number of nostalgic songs of our era were rendered. Our members were able to join in on a number of them and the session ended with a good old gospel song.

24 Sept., 2014 - Thirty-five members and partners enjoyed an outing on a beautiful sunny day to the TELCO Annual Meeting in Toronto. Following a delicious luncheon the meeting opened with the guest speaker Sandra Joyce. Following the death of Sandra's father she learned that he was one of the many British Home Children that had been sent out to Canada during the 1870-1948 period. The boys were essentially indentured farm labourers until age 18.

  The discovery that her father was a British Home Child led her to research his background and the fact he was only one of thousands of so called homeless children sent to Canada, Australia and other parts of the world. Her initial book "The Street Arab" was followed up with a sequel "Belongings." The meeting concluded with a financial report and the passing of revisions to the by-laws regarding charities under the Revenue Canada Income Tax Act.

19 June, 2014 - Our members and partners turned out for the Annual BBQ at the Port Credit Yacht Club. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. The fellowship and enjoyment of the day is expressed in four-thousand words when you click on these pictures.

03 April, 2014 - Our volunteers came through again when 7 of our members assisted "Friends of the Library," the  Oakville Library semi-annual book sale. The sale of withdrawn books raises money for the library but involves many hours of work setting up and packing up after the event.

01 April, 2014 - There was a good turnout for our Annual Meeting at Maple Grove United Church, Oakville. A delicious luncheon and social was enjoyed by our members and partners.

The main activity was the nomination and election for our 2014 - 2015 Executive who will begin their term on July 1st.

Barb Gohm will carry on as President for another term with Debbi Gill as Vice-President.

23 February, 2014 - Thirty-eight members and partners enjoyed the Sheridan Theatre's matinee performance of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." An afternoon of music, dancing and high society high jinks with two suave and sophisticated con artists in a small French town carried on a series of schemes, masquerades and double-crosses to swindle a young heiress. Following the show the attendees gathered at the Mandarin Restaurant on Dundas for dinner.

04 February, 2014 - About 35 of our members and partners attended our February luncheon and presentation. Evelyn Thoy of, DownsiZing DiVa, a Specialist in Downsizing and Moving Seniors was our guest speaker. "Plan to surround yourself with things you love and treasure. We don't own anything forever, we're just caretakers!" was Evelyn's theme. She explained her management and organizational skills in helping seniors to Plan - Pitch - Pass Along - Pack and Move. This can be a daunting task when we have to downsize and her organization can assist in all of these steps or just in the few that you may need advice and assistance.

 

03 December, 2013 - What a fabulous job our Program Committee did for our Annual Christmas Luncheon. A great turkey dinner was served to 124 members and partners. This was followed up by great entertainment, the Crafters Who Care blanket draw and the drawing for numerous gifts.

We were again fortunate to have as our guests Eduard and Christine Klassen. Eduard is an internationally known harpist, originally from Paraguay, and entertained us with his music and interesting facts from his life story and Mennonite background.

Eduard can play any kind of music from popular to the classics but Christian spiritual music is his passion.

07 October, 2013 - Thirty-three members and partners of the Oakville Club attended the TCV Annual Meeting of the five clubs held at the Novotel Hotel in Toronto.

Following a delicious buffet luncheon we were privileged to to have as our speaker Maureen Jennings, author of the "Murdoch Mysteries" and the popular CBC productions based on her books. Maureen provided information from her up-bringing in England to how she chose her character William Murdoch. Maureen also described some of the on-site production activities for the series.

 

01 October, 2013 -Approximately 35 members and partners enjoyed the  fall club luncheon and General Meeting.

The afternoon speaker was author Terry Reardon who gave a very interesting talk on his latest book, "Winston Churchill and MacKenzie King, So Similar, So Different."

 

02 June, 2013 - Seventy-five members and partners, traveling by coach and car, attended the production of "SHOUT!" at Stage West. An excellent buffet meal and an over-tempting desert selection was indulged in and enjoyed by all. The play was a mood musical that brought back the beautiful birds and smashing sounds that made England swing in the 60's.

08 June, 2013 - The Annual Bar-B-Q at the Port Credit Yacht Club was attended by 80 members and partners. An excellent meal was reported by the attendees.

 

 

02 April, 2013 - Our members enjoyed a delicious luncheon at the Maple Grove United Church Hall followed by our Annual Meeting. Barb Gohm was re-elected as President and Brenda Hicks takes up the position of Treasurer. After more than 20 years of excellent service of looking after our finances, Jean Cook has retired from the treasurers post.

05 February, 2013 - The February General Meeting was well attended. Our guest speaker was Mr. Lynn Philip Hodgson; who spoke on the World War II secret agent training school, Camp X. Mr. Hodgson became interested in Camp X in the 1970's and wanted to detail the facts of its existence, as well as record it's importance in Canadian History. Mr. Hodgson presented details on this spy training school, located on the shores of Lake Ontario, and gave many anecdotes on it's creation and existence. There were many questions following the presentation.

 

04 December, 2012 -One hundred and thirty-two members and guest attended our Annual Christmas Luncheon at Le Dome in Oakville. A delicious turkey dinner was served followed by entertainment and door prizes. "The Kerr Street Singers," 42 strong sang a number of songs, some with our members participating with them in singing Christmas Carol's. The Candy Cane Elf distributed candy canes and the Program Committee wearing red hats distributed the door prizes. Lorraine Patterson was the winner of the beautifully crafted quilt made by our "Crafters Who Care." A food collection was taken for the less fortunate and delivered to the Salvation Army in Burlington, Milton, Mississauga and Oakville.

06 November, 2012 - Some of our Program Committee members were hard at work planning and arranging the events that so many of our members enjoy. See the picture on the Coming Events page.

17 October, 2012 - Thirty of our members took advantage of our bus and traveled to Toronto for the 8th Annual TCV General Meeting with our sister clubs. Following a delicious luncheon and the treasurers report each club representative gave a short report on the activities of their club. The guest speaker, Carole Ann Cole, a former Bell VP and breast cancer survivor gave a very inspiring update on her "Comfort Heart Story" in support of cancer research.

02 October, 2012  - About 45 members enjoyed a real treat at our October general meeting with Eduard and Christine Klassen as our guests. Some said he was the best guest entertainer we have ever had.

04 June, 2012   70 members and guests attended the Oakville Retiree's Club Annual BBQ at the Port Credit Yacht Club. It was a great day of smiling faces, sunshine, good fellowship and a nice start to summer.

 

01 June, 2012   CONGRATULATIONS LORNA & JOAN

Lorna Maj has just completed her 11th year of volunteer service at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in which she has qualified for the Bell Canada "Helping Hands Award". In total Lorna has been able to provide a much welcomed $5,500.00 to this worthy Institution. Luisa Parente of OTMH, on the left, is shown receiving the $500 "Helping Hands" cheque from Lorna.

Joan Gibb is seen receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from Terrance Young MP for her many years of volunteer work. Joan has been involved with the Bell Canada health and social committees in both Quebec and Ontario. However her main dedication has been to the Canadian Cancer Society, many years with the Terry Fox Run, and the Halton Unit of the Ontario Division of Public Issues Committee (health issues). All of us at the Oakville Retirees' Club are proud of you both.

08 May, 2012  - Forty-seven members and guests attended the Famous People Players Show to see "Funky Monkey" preceded by a great chicken dinner. Following the funny and well performed show the audience returned to the dining area for a delicious desert of lemon tart and coffee. A great day was enjoyed by all.

15 March, 2012 -  Forty-one of our members and guests celebrated St. Patrick's Day a couple of days early at Carmens in Hamilton. By all reports it was a fine and enjoyable outing.

04 February, 2012 - On Valentine's Day 40 of our members and guests spent an enjoyable evening when they attended a lively performance of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma" performed by the ever talented Sheridan College theatre group.  

06 Dec. 2011 - Our Annual Christmas Luncheon was held at the Le Dome Banquet Hall in Oakville with 130 members and partners present. Unfortunately there were 18 no-shows which cost the club $540 as the meals were prepaid. Bill Hughes MC'd the festivities which included a delicious meal, a sing-a-long with Don Croucher, a number of door prizes and a visit from the Candy Cane Elf, Yvonne Seaton. The Crafters, under the auspices of Bea Medland and Giselle Dunn, again had a beautiful Sales Table and quilt draw. The proceeds will enable them to purchase materials and continue their charitable works for the worthy causes that they support. This year Donna Munn was the winner of the hand crafted quilt that took hundreds of hours to complete.

08 September, 2011 - Forty-six members and partners enjoyed a Cruise on the Grand River Belle, a short video  about the Grand River and a live Music Show followed by a 3-course roast beef lunch.

 

 

06 September, 2011 - Jennifer Young accepts a cheque for $1500.00 from Bea Medland on behalf of the "Darling Home for Kids" (formerly the Rose Cherry House) at Campbellville.

 This donation was made possible by the "Crafters Who Care" from their quilt draw and craft table at the Annual Oakville Retiree's Club Christmas Luncheon. The proceeds are being used to provide wheelchair accessibility to the kids playground.

All the more reason to appreciate and support the good works that these volunteer ladies do on behalf of our Club.

 

22 June, 2011 - The Annual BBQ at the Port Credit Yacht Club was largely attended and enjoyed by our members and partners. President Eileen Chewter took the opportunity to present Province of Ontario "Thank You" certificates, signed by Ted Chudleigh, M.P.P., Halton, for volunteer service to the following: "Crafters Who Care" - Bea Medland; "Salvation Army" - Bill Hughes; "Connect Care" - Venetia Binns; Lorna & Ed Maj. Presentations were made at the October meeting to Doug & Aletha Kirkwood  who were unable to attend.

 

05 April, 2011 - We had a good turnout for our Annual Meeting. The guest speaker Ron McLean was introduced by Bill Hughes. Ron brought us up to date on the founding of the Pauline Baxter-Moore Fund and the evolution of the fund and its assets from being a trust to the present management and distribution. A full slate of Executive for the 2011 - 2012 year was elected. 

15 February, 2011 - Thirty-three members attended the musical "Once upon a Mattress," based upon Hans Christian Anderson's "The Princess and The Pea, at the Theatre Sheridan.

01 February, 2011 - A General Meeting and luncheon was enjoyed by our members and entertained by our guest speaker, Judy Suke, of Sheridan College.

07 December,2010 - Our Annual Christmas Luncheon was held at the Le Dome Banquet Hall in Oakville with 142 members and partners present. Past-President Bill Hughes MC'd the festivities which included a delicious meal, a sing-a-long with Don Croucher, a number of door prizes and a visit from the Candy Cane Elf, Yvonne Seaton. Tom Brown, shown with Bea Medland, was the winner of the Crafters Who Care Quilt. The Crafters, under the auspices of Bea Medland and Giselle Dunn, reported a successful draw and White Elephant Table that raised approximately $1100.00. The proceeds will enable them to purchase materials and continue their charitable works for the worthy causes that they support.

13 September, 2010  - The 19th Annual Golf Tournament was held at the Deerfield Golf Course with 42 participants enjoying a beautiful day of golf and fellowship. Men Low Gross; Jim Dobson, Ron Bell low net; Women Low Gross; Marie Kapaskey, Bonnie Parsons low net. A sumptuous meal and awards presentation followed.

03 June, 2010 - Members and partners again enjoyed the Annual BBQ held at the Port Credit Yacht Club. A generous collection of food for the less fortunate was delivered to the Salvation Army in Oakville and Mississauga.

01 May, 2010 - Forty-eight members and partners dodged the rain and enjoyed the Annual Pancake Breakfast at our Balsam Drive Clubroom.

06 April, 2010 - The Annual Meeting with the election of Officers for the 2010-11 year followed an enjoyable fellowship time and luncheon.

17 March, 2010 - 58 members, partners and guests celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a lunch of fish and Irish stew, followed by an Irish program at "Carmen's" in Hamilton.

16 February, 2010 - An excellent production of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes!" was enjoyed at Theatre Sheridan. A number of our members returned with rave revues of a great show. Our program committee sure comes up will great outings and entertainment.

02 February, 2010 - A good turnout enjoyed lunch and and a presentation by Halton Regional Police; "Seniors And Law Enforcement Together."

 

01 December, 2009 - The Annual Christmas Luncheon, with 131 attendees, was held at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville. Following a delicious luncheon, entertainment was provided by Jim Cormier as "Crooner James" who took us back to the golden oldies. The Program Committee distributed numerous prizes and the Candy Cane Elf made sure that everyone got a miniature candy cane.

  The "Crafters Who Care" had a successful sale at their Crafters Table and raised more than $900 towards their charitable works.  Darryl Roberts was the lucky winner  of the "Crafters Who Care" quilt. (demonstrated by Norma McIntyre & Bea Medland) The winning ticket was sold by club member Norma Beynon.

   Eighteen boxes of food were donated and distributed to the Salvation Army Food Banks in Mississauga, Oakville and Milton.

 

21 October, 2009 - 48 members and guests took a luxury coach ride to St. Jacob’s to see ”The Heiress” at the St. Jacob’s Playhouse Theatre.  This theatre is the newest member of the Drayton Entertainment Group of six theatres in Ontario.  Before the show we had lunch at the Crossroads.  This was a buffet fit for a king or queen.  The show was excellent and the star, Catherine, didn’t get mad; she got even.  A great day!  This outing should be repeated.

09 October, 2009 - 51 members and guests took the big yellow school bus to Niagara-On-The-Lake and the Shaw Festival Theatre for a fine box lunch and to see “The Devil’s Disciple”.  The show was a little slow starting, but finished strong.  A good outing.

06 October, 2009 - Regular General Meeting at Maple Grove United Church with a free lunch.  It was well attended with three guest speakers from TD Waterhouse.

16 September, 2009 - Forty-six Oakville members and partners had a very enjoyable outing when they attended the Telco Community Volunteers Board of Directors fifth Annual General Meeting that was held aboard the "Northern Spirit" cruise ship in the Toronto harbour.

11 May, 2009 - Our Club members enjoyed a pleasant trip to Brantford. Following an enjoyable luncheon they attended a concert at the beautifully restored Sanderson Centre. Unfortunately they were disappointed with the music.

05 June, 2009 - The following members completed 30 hours of community service on behalf of the Oakville Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society at Appleby College, Oakville: Stan Beaudette, Bill Check, Tom Brown, Danny Moniz, Claude Therrien, Roy Warmington and Dave Warren.  Also a special Thank You to Kel Kaye and his wife Shirley for their past service to Community Service.     

                                                                             

 04 June, 2009 - Ninety-one members and partners turned out for the Annual BBQ at the Port Credit Yacht Club. The weather came out of the doldrums and the sun shone for a perfect day. The White Elephant Table was a great success with more than $56 being raised for the Club Treasury. Shirley Kaye, Shirley Deforest and Rose Marie Grinton, among many, snapped up the bargains at the White Elephant Table.

08 September, 2008 - Our 18th annual golf tournament took place on September the 8th at the Deerfield Golf and C.C. The weather , the course, the fellowship, the food, and the prizes all made for a terrific day. Thanks again to our hosts Ron Naccarato and Chris Harvey.

06 June, 2008 - Our annual BBQ has changed location from the church to the Port Credit Yacht Club. Everyone who attended will agree this change was a plus. The BBQ food was plentiful with a great variety, including salads and desserts. The weather was perfect and the scenery enjoyable. The white elephant sale was also a success. Next year the BBQ will be held at the same location, but possibly on Thursday so we don’t conflict with the “Oakville Walk for Life”.

03 May, 2008 - At the Clubhouse on Balsam we once again enjoyed a Pancake Breakfast. This is a bargain at $5.00. In spite of the weather 50 members and guests attended.
